Sea Moss And Fertility: What You Need To Know

If you’re struggling to conceive with your partner, you’re not alone. Roughly one out of every eight couples will have trouble getting pregnant. That’s more than six million people who face difficulties getting pregnant every year.

That’s why there are so many fertility treatments, products, and trends out there. However, not every tip you read in parenting magazines will help improve your fertility. It’s important to work on separating fact from wishful thinking, especially when it comes to taking care of your body.

One of the most recent topics trending in fertility chat rooms, forums, and social media is sea moss. Some claim that this new “superfood” can improve the chances of conceiving in both men and women.

So, is this just another fad – or is there real evidence to back up these claims about sea moss and fertility

That’s what we want to talk about. So here’s what you need to know about Irish sea moss, its ingredients, and its science-based uses for fertility.

What Is Sea Moss?

Irish sea moss is a red seaweed known in the scientific community as Chondrus crispus. It grows in the northern parts of the Atlantic Ocean. It is predominantly harvested around the northeast of the United States and in northern Europe, and in the Caribbean islands.

Most commonly, sea moss is used as a thickening agent in foods. You’ll see it used in ice cream, milk, smoothies, baked goods, and even baby formula. However, Irish sea moss’s health benefits range far beyond that of a thickening agent. It’s packed full of essential nutrients, making it a valuable supplement for many kinds of foods and health regimes.

What Are The Claims About Sea Moss And Fertility?

sea moss and fertility for men and women

The correlation between sea moss and fertility was first rumored to exist in the Caribbean. Many local residents have been using sea moss as an aphrodisiac for men, and claims of the algae’s fertility benefits soon began to grow.

Many believe that sea moss affects both male and female fertility, saying that it increases testosterone levels and sperm count and speeds up the timeline for getting pregnant. The question is, are these claims valid

What The Research Says

At Freshly Rooted Tribe, we want to provide you with real evidence to support the benefits of sea moss. So, let’s talk about what actual scientific research has to say about sea moss and fertility.

Sea Moss Includes Three Key Nutrients Tied To Fertility

We want to point out that sea moss contains some fundamental nutrients that any doctor would recommend when someone is struggling with fertility. We are increasingly learning that nutrition plays an enormous role in conception, and sea moss is undoubtedly packed with three key ingredients related to fertility.

1. Folate (Vitamin B-9)

In a recent study, women who used folic acid supplements were up to 15 percent more likely to become pregnant within 12 cycles than those that did not. This is especially true for women struggling with irregular periods or unusually short cycles.

Just a 100-gram portion of sea moss has 182 micrograms of folate. According to the Mayo Clinic, “adult women who are planning a pregnancy or could become pregnant should be advised to get 400 to 1,000 mcg of folic acid a day.” Sea moss can therefore be an excellent supplement for aspiring mothers to include in their daily diets.

2. Iodine

Iodine is important for pregnant women, but it’s also critical immediately before pregnancy. Earlier in 2021, researchers found that iodine could very well play a role in therapy for unexplained infertility. The average person needs 220 mcg of iodine a day, but you could need as many as 290 mcg in pregnancy.

Sea moss is a wonderful natural source of the mineral iodine. Eating two to four tablespoons of sea moss a day is safe, healthy, and potentially an excellent way to boost women’s fertility. Research has suggested that women deficient in iodine are 46 percent less likely to get pregnant than women with normal iodine levels.

3. Iron

Lastly, let’s talk about iron. Every 100 grams of sea moss contains about 9 milligrams of iron. That’s a higher ratio than a piece of chicken, so if you need to boost your iron intake, sea moss could be the way to go.

There have been many studies that indicate there’s a strong link between healthy ovaries and iron supplements. Many doctors will recommend aiming for about 27 mg of iron a day if you’re pregnant or trying to conceive, and if that’s the case, you’ll need many iron-rich foods to add to your daily meals.

The bottom line is that we’re not going to tell you sea moss is the cure for fertility issues. It’s not that black and white. However, research and real scientific data point out that certain nutrients are essential to conception, and sea moss contains high amounts of some of these key ingredients.

Male Fertility And Sea Moss

As we mentioned, Caribbean cultures often promote sea moss as a male aphrodisiac. However, we don’t have firm evidence to prove that’s true – mostly just anecdotes and personal recommendations.

However, a healthy diet full of the proper nutrients can contribute to fertility, so the consumption of sea moss may have contributed to better sex drives, performance, and fertility in some men. We just can’t draw causation – only a possible correlation.

Female Fertility And Sea Moss

Similarly, there is no specific research indicating that consuming sea moss improves fertility in women. However, like male fertility, female fertility benefits from a diet full of the right ingredients (like those mentioned above).

As found in the study titled “Female Fertility: An Interdependent Correlation,” a correct balance of proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, antioxidants, and folate in the daily diet provides essential benefits for optimal female reproductive health and reduces the risk of infertility. So, if there are claims that sea moss benefits female fertility, they likely stem from an awareness of the algae’s great nutritional benefits.

A Final Word

Sea Moss and Fertility: What You Need to Know 1

It doesn’t matter what anyone says: there’s no one cure for infertility. Everyone is different, and your reproductive health depends on many factors – including your diet, exercise, supplements, and mental wellbeing. So anyone who says they have a panacea for fertility is making an outrageous claim.

However, if you and your partner are struggling to conceive, you should talk to your doctor to learn what nutrients you might be missing out on. There’s a chance that Irish sea moss could hold some of the key ingredients you need to have a complete, healthy diet.
